Unlocking a PDF removes a password you already know, so you can open, copy, and print the document freely without being prompted every time. It is meant for files you own or are authorized to access.

What unlocking a PDF does

Many PDFs are protected with a password or with restrictions on printing and copying. When you supply the correct password, Slate removes that protection and saves an unrestricted copy, so the document behaves like any ordinary PDF from then on.

There are two kinds of protection this addresses: a password that must be typed to open the file, and permission settings that block printing, copying, or editing even after it opens. Providing the password you already have lets Slate produce a clean, unrestricted copy. It cannot recover or guess a password you do not know, because that protection exists precisely to keep unauthorized people out.
